How to keep your computer Cyber secure

In the online world, there are huge benefits to using systems that are always available and accessed over the Internet. This also comes with an element of risk, in that there is always some form of Cyber security threat trying to catch you out in some way.

There are many tools and processes which can help you keep your computer and business secure, let’s take a look at some really simple solutions which used in tandem, and go a really long way in helping you stay protected online.

Not using an administrator account

First up, is not using an administrator account for your day to day operations. This means that when you’re logged into your computer and using it, you don’t have full control over it. Now, you may be thinking “I really need full control”, but the reality is you really don’t. Whilst you don’t want to download something dodgy or click on that fake email link if you do, and you’re not an administrator, there is a good chance you will stop the nasty program from being able to run – hence this keeps you protected.

Keeping up-to-date with security updates

If you use a Windows computer, for example, I’m sure you will be familiar with your weekly Windows Updates prompting you/installing themselves. These types of updates are crucial to keeping you secure. Many of them “patch over” security holes in the systems and help stop the bad guys from exploiting your computer. All major software vendors such as Microsoft, Apple, Android etc will release periodic updates for their operating system software – and you should get them installed as soon as can. Ideally, aim for a weekly automatic update cycle.

Protect the system using Anti-Virus/Anti-Malware software

Using some good quality Cyber Security is a must, from a well known and proven vendor. A good product will keep your system protected from computer viruses, malware and web-based threats. The software should be configured so it’s constantly updated, is always monitoring your system and automatically removes the threats it detects. Whilst no Cyber Security software is perfect, there are some which are better than others, and whilst there may be some free products out there, they tend to be limited when it comes to features and overall protection.

Use common sense and question everything

This final one isn’t linked to software or some kind of security suite, it’s good old common sense. You must remain vigilant at all times, questions everything and don’t just click on things “willy nilly”. If in any doubt, don’t click on things, don’t click on links in emails, and don’t just download things without questioning why. The general rule of thumb here is, that if you don’t recognise it, delete it. In terms of email, the worst thing that would ever happen is someone calling you to see why didn’t respond to that email, at which point you pick things up if they appear to be genuine.
