Are you limping along on an old Internet connection?

With the claimed average UK Internet connection speed for businesses to be anything between 76Mbps and 234Mbps, it’s fair to assume you should be getting at least 40Mbps (in an area which hasn’t yet had a Fibre upgrade), with a realistic connection speed being 70Mbps (in an area that has had a high-speed Fibre upgrade). If you’re still limping along on something which is below 25Mbps, then there’s a chance this is slowing you and your business down.

How do I test my Internet connection speed?

All you simply do is visit the https://fast.com/ website and let it run the speed test. You’ll get a figure which represents your connection speed at that moment in time. You will, of course, get different results based on how many devices are using your Internet connection at the time of the test. The best thing to do is to run the test, using a computer which is connected to your router via an Ethernet cable (also called a network cable), with the Wifi turned off on your computer (forcing the test to run via the cable), when no one else is using your connection.

Check to see what Internet connection speeds you can upgrade to

You can find out what speeds are possible in your area for an Internet Service Provider. We’d of course prefer you ask us about this, and we’ll be able to provide some estimated speeds and costs for you. All that’s needed is your full business address, and if you have an Internet service which you also pay line rental on, let us know the number of that line as well (this is not essential, it helps), and on that note…

You don’t need to rent a phone line for your Internet connection

You don’t need to have a phone line in place for your Internet connection. We don’t want to bore you with technical jargon, so we’ll keep this brief, the newer types of Internet connections such as SoGEA and FTTP do not require a phone line or phone line rental at all, so by upgrading to a new high-speed Internet connection, you might end up saving money because you no longer need to pay line rental.
